Trout Fishing Tips 259

August 17, 2010 - 2:05 pm No Comments

For those of you who are new to trout fishing, I figured I’d write a quick guide to trout fishing, in the form of an article, with the intention of making your next trout fishing excursion as enjoyable and successful as possible. Fishing for trout can be a bit different than fishing for other species of fish, if you want to achieve any level of success that is. Trout can be a very finicky fish, and can be quite difficult to catch. After this quick article, you’ll be in a much better position than just going out to your local trout stream blind and winging it.

More than 20 years ago, I had the pleasure of being taught the nuances of trout fishing, by an angler that I’ve always considered to be a trout fishing master. I honestly don’t think master is too strong a word either. This man, who I consider my fishing mentor, had more trophy trout mounted than any person I’ve ever known, and all of these trophy trout were caught from rivers and streams in central Pennsylvania that most people only caught average trout out of. In any case, he was my fishing mentor, and this quick guide to trout fishing was born largely because of him.

My fishing mentor was a big believer in live worms as bait as well. He always said that when it comes to trout, there is no better bait than live worms. Oh, and that really large trout love live crayfish also. And when it comes to using live worms as bait, he insisted, as I do to this day, on using gang hooks to rig those live worms. You see, a set of pre-tied gang hooks is the only way to present a live worm in a completely natural manner. As a matter of fact, the idea of using a single hook to fish with worms has been completely lost on me, I just don’t understand how anyone wouldn’t employ gang hooks (once they’re introduced to them). The bottom line is that you need to use live worms when trout fishing, and those live worms need to be presented with gang hooks.

These two rivers later meet up to form the Alagnak which I discussed about earlier in this article. If you think you will have to face a lot of crowds during trout fishing season, let me tell you that these places are very much un-crowded which means you will really enjoy your fishing days without having to huddle through crowds.

Healthy Easy Past Recipes

Healthy easy pasta recipes are very simple to make and you don’t have to spend hours in the kitchen. Instead you can do more of the things you enjoy. The great thing about them also is that kids love them too and although it has all those carbs, whole wheat pasta is a good source of dietary fiber. Furthermore, preparing a great tasting, better for you pasta dinner at home is recommended where you are in charge of the ingredients you add. Try to always keep the size of a portion under control and by adding more vegetables and lean meat you couldn’t ask for a more delightful and healthy pasta meal. You can pretty much add any vegetables you want too.

Always Use Light Fishing Line – As I said in the last tip, trout are almost always found in cold, clear water and using light line is a must when fishing for them. Trout have very keen eyesight as well and can easily detect fishing line under the water if it is too heavy, and if the trout detect your fishing line they are much less apt to bite your offering. I personally use four pound test monofilament for all of my trout fishing and suggest that everyone do the same. If you think that four pound test is too light, you may want to consider the fact that I regularly hook and land trout in the twenty + inch range while using four pound test monofilament.

In this article I will do my best to explain some of the basics of trout fishing in an attempt to help you avoid some common trout fishing mistakes. Understanding “the basics” is very important when fishing for trout. Fishing for these multi colored fish can be a bit different than fishing for many other species of fish, and the regular rules of fishing don’t necessarily apply when fishing for trout.

Present Bait Naturally – When fishing for trout and using bait (which is a great idea by the way) you want to present your bait in the most natural way possible. Remember, large trout get that way for a reason. They have been caught before, and have seen almost anything that you throw at them before. For this reason you want your bait to look a much like it does naturally as possible. Gang hooks are the best way I’ve seen to accomplish this task, especially if worms are being used as bait.

If you like fishing for trout and have been doing so for some time this article will help you take your trout fishing to the next level. In this article I will use my twenty plus years of trout fishing experience to outline some very effective trout fishing tips that are for the trout fisherman who has “been around the block”, so to speak.

Fishing for trout is different than fishing for many species of fish. The first thing to keep in mind in regards to trout fishing is what kind of trout you are fishing for. Not the species of trout so much, as the kind of trout. There are two kinds of trout; planted and native. Planted trout have been born and bred in tanks or ponds and fed by humans until they reach a certain size. Planted trout are then released into waterways throughout the country with the express purpose of being caught by anglers.

Native trout on the other hand have been born and bred under natural circumstances. Planted trout can become much like native trout after surviving a few seasons in a given waterway. The point is that catching planted trout versus catching native trout is the difference between playing basketball against the varsity team and playing against a group of twelve year olds. At the end of the day there really is no comparison.

You want to stay out of the trout’s line of sight as much as possible. Remember: if you can see the trout, they can probably see you. The scents on your hands are another way trout can “see” you. You see, any scents that are on your hands will transfer to your bait or lure. If experienced trout smell anything unnatural they are much less apt to bite your offering. You want to eliminate unnatural scents from your hands by rubbing your hands in a handful of grass or washing with some odor neutralizing soap.

Use the season to your advantage when it comes to fishing for trout. As far as larger trout are concerned, there is no better season than the fall. I’ve caught virtually all of my trophy trout in the fall. As you know, things like fishing on “opening day” can be a waste of time because of crowds and such. Use your personal experience to your advantage and spend most of your time trout fishing when the rivers and lakes are the least crowded and the most fishable.
