I don’t know about Emily Post – but I have always used Black Ink for something formal.

    Black. Preferable india ink. And it is in the same train of thought that we get, Black-tie affair, for formal event. And please use the proper parchment.

    Don’t know what Emily would say, but I think black is used for formal invitations and correspondence.
