Is it reasonable to expect a ten year old to have basic table manners?

May 13, 2010 - 7:05 am 13 Comments

I often eat with a friend and her ten year old daughter. The girl often eats her salad with her fingers, will hold serving dishes up to her nose to smell the food, does not sit flat in her chair, and ignores basic table manners in other ways, too. I have mentioned it but the response is that I don’t know how to raise a child. The mother and daughter are exceptional in so many ways. Am I expecting too much?

Hello,

If mama can’t teach the child, society eventually will. People will think they will be better off bringing an ape to the table than this poorly disciplined child and no doubt she’ll be excluded from a lot of things.

Cheers,

Michael Kelly

How do I tell a friend she needs to work on her table manners?

May 8, 2010 - 4:02 pm 4 Comments

I have a friend with Aspergers. She does well in most areas but one thing she does often is that she has very poor table manners. (chewing with her mouth open, not using a fork and knife when she should) I want to know if and how I should approach this topic with her. She’s a great person, about to graduate college, so she’s about to go out into the world and the sad truth is I’m worried people will judge her without her knowing why.

You could approach it as, "Let’s both brush up on our table manners before we graduate." Then you could both sign up for a class (check your local community college), or you could buy a book and read it together. If the rules about how to act are coming from a third party, she might not feel like it’s criticism coming from you. Who knows, you might learn something too :)

Table Manners…?

May 7, 2010 - 5:12 pm 6 Comments

I would like to know how to follow perfect etiquette at a fancy dinner. I have basic knowledge of table manners, (No elbows on the table, etc.) but would like to be acquainted with the finer nuances.

Does anyone have any advice or links to help me?

It’s been a long time since I attended a formal dinner.

If I remember correctly, if you have a waiter at your table, they are supposed to remove your napkin from its holder or from your plate and place it gently in your lap. You start with the silverware farthest from the plate and work your way in through each course. Always try to leave a little something on your plate after each course and when you are done with a course, place the silverware that you did use upside down on the plate (this is supposed to signal the waiter to remove your plate). If you are served bread, the proper way of eating it is to break it or cut it into smaller pieces and if you want butter, to then butter the smaller pieces. If you are served white wine or champagne, try to carefully hold the glass by the stem so that you preserve the chill on the glass. Cut everything into little bites before eating. If a lady at the table should rise to go somewhere or do something, you should rise as well out of respect when she gets up and rise again when she comes back (this is ONLY if a speaker is not speaking or video playing etc).
