Do bad table manners really put you off someone?

June 3, 2010 - 7:00 am 6 Comments

I have this problem, I hate it when people have bad table manners, it’s gross!

Yes, it definitely puts me off people. Meals are some of the more intimate contact we have with people, and if they behave disgustingly it’s almost as bad as body odor and bad sex. It’s difficult to mention and impossible to change. Like everything else we consider when choosing out friends and partners, table manners is a big deal. In fact, for me, it’s a dealbreaker.

how important is table manners to you?

May 31, 2010 - 1:10 pm 14 Comments

How important is it that someone has table manners to you? Is it something crucial ? Is it a turn off to find your date or partner someone who doesn’t have table manners?

I think people should be themselves on a date and not try to be something you’re not to impress someone else. If you wind up married, you will live with this person.

If you have poor table manners, you will most likely turn off anyone that has good table manners because they won’t want to be around you. Similarly, the person who isn’t particular about table manners, might not want to be around someone who has to do everything just right.

How I get my 12 year old to have better table manners?

May 29, 2010 - 12:39 am 9 Comments

I have a 12 year old daughter and I’d really like her to start eating more like a lady. She licks her fingers and eats with her fingers when she should be using utensils. Sometimes I feel like I spend the whole meal hounding her and correcting her- which isn’t good either. How can I get her to have better table manners.

Video tape her and show her how she looks. It sounds kind of cruel, but she does not understand how rude it looks and sounds.

Let her see the difference.

If I decorate the christmas table fancy and wear nice clothes will guests use manners?

May 26, 2010 - 8:35 am 7 Comments

My in laws never seem to use manners. All the holidays we have hosted, they have usually come in pajamas and had horrible table manners. I’m beginning to think I made the holidays too casual. If I mention I’m making this holiday more formal, do you think they will get the clue and now wear bath robes and use table manners? My parents and sister are coming for dinner also and I want to feel proud of my in laws instead of embarassed.

I think it is hopeless for you to try to mix the two families. I believe you posted before, right? You ought to perhaps give up on this trying to work. They are going to embarrass you. Perhaps working it out with your family, getting their understanding before hand. Maybe each side having one get together and you never hosting both the same year.

Why are table manners important when sharing a meal?

May 22, 2010 - 10:24 pm 6 Comments

What are some table manners to have an enjoyable meal?

Manners of any kind allow everyone to feel comfortable. Although it was not in a table setting, I was just experiencing discomfort at the internet seat I’m at in the library. And it’s something that can also happen at a table seating. The person next to me was coughing just about every minute or two, and it was starting to make me feel very uncomfortable. It didn’t seem like he was covering his mouth. If it was me I would have stepped aside and gotten some water…or at least coughed in a tissue. He did leave afther awhile but not until I started feeling agitated.

When did table manners start in Japan?

May 20, 2010 - 5:03 am 2 Comments

I’m researching table manners/etiquette in Japan, but I need to know the history of the tradition, or at least when the earliest date of them using it would be. Help?

This is an exert from a website I just found, I hope this helps. I’ll give you the link…

"Modern Japanese table manners, for the most part, originated at the formal feasts of the samurai warrior class during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. From these feasts evolved the rituals and complicated manners for using tableware and chopsticks that are still commonly practiced today."
