The Color of Diamonds
If youre looking to buy diamonds for engagement rings or bridal sets, youll need to decide on color. Diamond colors are graded with letters of the alphabet from D to Z. The reason A, B, and C aren’t used is that they’re kept in reserve just in case a higher grade diamond is ever found. That’s not very likely though, as D diamonds are fully colorless and white – it’d be impossible to imagine anything whiter.
Moving down the scale, diamonds are either classified as colorless (grades D-F inclusive) or near-colorless (grades G-J inclusive). In practice, however, the ordinary person’s eye would not be able to say any differences between those two categories, so when you are choosing your diamond for your engagement rings and bridal sets, you can have your choice of any of these. Indeed, even professional jewelers themselves can’t judge a diamond’s color by looking at it – they have to do specific steps to decide on the color. So if you are to buy even a J diamond, know that to all intents and purposes, its colorless.
